Economic structure of the City of Koblenz
A multitude of national and state authorities are based in Koblenz creating an important administrative, economic and cultural centre in the central Rhine area.
The cities beautiful location on the ‚Deutsches Eck' between the Rhine and Moselle makes Koblenz a favourite destination for day-trippers and international tourists alike.
Koblenz is also a favourite shopping metropole for the central Rhine area with a large catchment area containing ca. 650.000 residents. The city is exceptional for the large and varied selection of individual shops as well as the above average purchasing power.
Around 50.000 commuters enter the city every day (43.000 workers and 9.000 students), as opposed to only 3.500 residents who work outside the city.
Koblenz is the location of around 50 state and 15 national authorities. It is notable that the national department for defence technology and acquisition with ca. 4.000 employees. Furthermore Koblenz is an important location for military offices and units in Germany with the main army headquarters for example.
The individual economic sectors have developed differently in recent years. The service sector has seen very strong growth whereas farming and forestry has been in decline. Around 56% of employers and 65% of employees are in service industries.
An important feature of the economy of Koblenz is the predominantly middle sized enterprises which are typified by the many craft based industries. Koblenz possess a healthy, diverse economic structure.
Koblenz's geographical location makes it a top transport node where important north-south and east-west axes cross. On top of this there are excellent transport links to the surrounding countryside and catchment areas. The city lies at the crossroads of three motorways and six national roads.
Koblenz is a node for national and international rail networks as well as regional and local bus lines.
Koblenz lies on the important waterways of the Rhine and Moselle which provide an important proportion of the goods transported for trade and industry. The Rheinhafen (Rhine Harbour), which is surrounded by a large industry park, provides a very good waterside connection for the companies located there. The neighbouring Moselle harbour Koblenz-Rauental especially serves the trade in mineral oil products.
The city also boasts a regional airport in Winnigen.
Following the second world war, and especially following the founding of the European Community, Koblenz underwent a major structural change . The city set up industry parks and ran an active promotional policy leading to a broad range of industries setting up in Koblenz.
The Rheinhafen industrial park is the largest in the central Rhine area with ca. 200 ha. Furthermore, other industry and trade areas have been developed so that now more than 12.000 employees work in the industrial sector. Currently the industry park on the autobahn A61 is being developed as a goods transport centre. Further trade areas are currently in development including a new shopping complex Bubenheim / B 9, where High-Tec companies, Industrie and the furniture giant IKEA will be located.
The industry tax income is currently 395%.
Amongst the most important production companies belong:
- TRW with 1.200 employees.
This industrial concern develops, produces and exports world-wide brakes and brake systems for motor vehicles.
- CORUS Koblenz division, with 1.100 employees. This manufacturer is the world leader in the production of aluminium components.
- STABILUS with 1.600 employees in Koblenz (one of 6 locations situated in England, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy, Mexico). The company supplies the automobile industry and produces shock absorbers. Koblenz is the company headquarters and development department.
Amongst the largest service industries is "Debeka" supplying health insurance, savings schemes and general insurance (2.000 Employees).
Unemployment in Koblenz was 6,4% in March 2003. This below the average for equivalent cities, not only in Rheinland-Pfalz.
